JIMMY BORGES APPEARANCES IN HAWAII FIVE-0

JIMMY B 6

It’s no secret that the Careless Navigator is a big fan of the fantastic all round Hawaiian entertainer Jimmy Borges.

About six years ago we were enjoying a Mai Tai at Chucks Cellar in Waikiki. Unknown to us we had walked into a private party where there was a really cool guy singing at the piano. This was my first introduction to the incredible talent of Jimmy Borges…since then l am always on the lookout for Jimmy’s work past and present.

THE WORK OF LLUIS FUZZHOUND

Turborock 2010

Long before l had any idea of what the visual arts where all about

…l was into them. In particular music posters and more specifically band gig posters. From an early age l was peeling posters off walls, notice boards etc… my own personal philosophy has always been ‘ a gig poster is only truly successful if someone wants to steal it ‘. l remember years ago being at a party and finding one of the posters we designed stuck on the back of the toilet door…proud moment.

TIKI VILLAGE SURFERS PARADISE FOOTAGE

There is often talk about how great the original Tiki Village Surfers Paradise (Queensland, Australia) was. I know it is still there in some form as a time share resort, but here is some footage from 1967. lt is part of a Seekers TV special…so you are going to have to listen to and watch the Seekers but hey, great rare footage of the pool area. The song is not too bad l guess.

EL GATO GOMEZ IN AND OUTA SPACE

E01zoo

I am loathed to use the term Lowbrow Art these days as it seems to encompass way to many artists and styles, basically from pinstripers to Mark Ryden…if you get my drift.

Duke Carter Speaks

I had almost forgotten about this short interview with Duke Carter, author of Tiki Quest. I know it’s a few years old now but l consider it to be the best introduction to to Tiki and Tiki mugs you can get. No bull shit just the passion.

The Hawaiian Great – Jimmy Borges

JIMMY 4

The Careless Navigator would like to

…make a short mention of a real Hawaiian great, Jimmy Borges. Singer and actor.

You may think you have never heard of him (particularly here in Australia), but l can almost guarantee you have. He is one of those guy’s with endless energy. Though, in his mid seventies he looks like he is in his forties (how does that work?). The past five decades or so has seen him work as jazz singer all over the United States, including long stints in Vegas and of course Hawaii.

It’s the End of the Hawaiian Hut at Ala Moana

HAWAIIAN VILLAGE 7

Well it’s all over

…for the Hawaiian Hut in Honolulu without much fan fare. Max from Taboo Island just sent me this in an email.

  • Max says… I’ve got some sad info for you – You remember, the Hawaiian Hut at Ala Moana had closed a little while ago with plans to re-open later once the economy turns around. Well, I found out that they closed permanently and had an auction to sell off everything.  The auction was poorly advertised (I never found out about it until after the fact) and basically no one turned up for it.  I heard they sold some things, then gave a bunch of stuff away, then threw the rest away in a big dumpster! I scored an amazing 8 foot long carved Marquesan paddle online from there, and that’s how I found out about all this.  It is classic, vintage tiki.  I have no idea if anyone else salvaged anything.

I have been there half a dozen times over the years. lt was a Polynesian cabaret room in Honolulu that sat below the Ala Moana Hotel and next to the shopping centre. It always looked strangely out of place.
