CARELESS NAVIGATOR

Adventures in paradise

Email a short review and photos of your discoveries, whether it’s a bar, a drink, a building, a restaurant, a band, a gallery show – any experience that you think other Tikiphiles may be interested in. As with all adventures, there may be more than one aspect that needs a review. Divide them up into parts if need be.  info@carelessnavigator.com

Vintage Coco Palms 8mm Footage backed by Tiki Joe’s Ocean

One of the great music releases this year

…exotica or otherwise has been Andy Nazzal’s “Under the Midnight Sun” by Tiki Joe’s Ocean. The Careless Navigator loves this CD.

As most of you know l’ve been working on “The Hawaii Home Movies of the 1950′s, 60′s and 70′s Part Two” DVD and as a bit of a teaser Andy allowed me to use “Aloha Amor” from the new CD to cut some classic vintage Coco Palms resort footage to.

CN Goes to a Mid-century Soiree at the Walsh St Boyd House

It has taken me a while to get around to writing this.

If fact l had no real intention to doing anything on the mid-century soiree that we attend early in August as there has been heaps in the press and on the web about the night. I swear out of the 60 something  attendees 90% must have had some connection to, or work in the media.

Max from Taboo Island is at Tiki Oasis REPORT No. 3

TO3 photo7

We rejoin our on the spot reporter

…Ginger Gimlet, at Tiki Oasis in San Diego for the big day, Saturday, where everyone was sporting their best Aloha wear.

The day started with a full courtyard and ballroom of amazing vendors with dollar bills trading between hands faster than a strip club.  Vendors worked non stop all day with no breaks.  This reporter barely left the Taboo Island suite, as they needed all the help they could get, since everyone was a bit hungover from the night before.  I was able to escape slightly to check out the classic car show in the parking lot, featuring a nice selection of great classics and hot rods.  (photos 1,2,3)

Max from Taboo Island is at Tiki Oasis REPORT No. 2

TO PHOTO 3

We now return to our on the spot reporter, Peach Colada, reporting live from Tiki Oasis in sunny San Deigo.

Friday was the opening day at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  Steady streams of tikiphiles and rumologists filled the property all day long as they checked in, and had their first “tastes” of the weekend. This reporter spent most of the day in the Taboo Island vending suite, waiting as the merchandise was set up.  Waiting for what you ask?  The free rum drinks, of course!  Taboo Island teamed up with Forbidden Island of Alameda and sponsor Zaya Rum to offer everyone a “Sip and Shop” experience from 4 to 6pm.  As Taboo Island promptly opened up at 5:15, the room was attacked by a slightly angry and very thirsty mob.  It became standing room only as people gulped down the exotic beverages.  There was much rioting and looting, some other debauchery in the adjoining bedroom and general mayhem.  A door man was installed to try and keep the crowd in line, but he was easily coaxed from his post with a few cocktails.  Even our Channel 7 cameraman had issues, as he dropped his camera in a vat of mai tai’s.  He attempted to sketch out the scene, but basically, folks, he’s no artist.

The Careless Navigator has a man on the ground at Tiki Oasis this year.

Yes, it’s our good buddy Max from Taboo Island. Hopefully we will get one of these everyday starting with this….the Bali Hai bash. If you are reading this and you are at Tiki Oasis feel free to track Max down and add your own 10 cents worth to the report. Taboo Island is a vendor at Tiki Oasis.

Swizzle on Gecko

GECKO BOWL 3

Below

…is an article from Swizzle about Gecko. Swizzle has always been a great supporter of the Careless Navigator and l am really pleased that he took the time to put this together. I should point out that Swizzle is a talented carver in his own right and hopefully he will do the sculpt for the new Careless Navigator Tiki mug. There is a great example of his work on the Careless Navigator Home page at the moment.

Lisa and Brice Ginardi – Okolemaluna Tiki Lounge – Report

OKOLEMALUNA 5

We all know how frustrating it is

…that the place you would expect to have the classic Tiki bar experience, namely the Islands of Hawaii, has little to offer these days apart from the obvious, La Mariana and some watered down examples. So when l heard a while back about Lisa and Brice Ginardi’s Okolemaluna Tiki Lounge project in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, l asked Lisa if she would give the Careless Navigator progress reports. I’m calling this “Part One” in the hope Lisa will continue updates.
So here it is in the Ladies own words.
