We now return to our on the spot reporter, Peach Colada, reporting live from Tiki Oasis in sunny San Deigo.
Friday was the opening day at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Steady streams of tikiphiles and rumologists filled the property all day long as they checked in, and had their first “tastes” of the weekend. This reporter spent most of the day in the Taboo Island vending suite, waiting as the merchandise was set up. Waiting for what you ask? The free rum drinks, of course! Taboo Island teamed up with Forbidden Island of Alameda and sponsor Zaya Rum to offer everyone a “Sip and Shop” experience from 4 to 6pm. As Taboo Island promptly opened up at 5:15, the room was attacked by a slightly angry and very thirsty mob. It became standing room only as people gulped down the exotic beverages. There was much rioting and looting, some other debauchery in the adjoining bedroom and general mayhem. A door man was installed to try and keep the crowd in line, but he was easily coaxed from his post with a few cocktails. Even our Channel 7 cameraman had issues, as he dropped his camera in a vat of mai tai’s. He attempted to sketch out the scene, but basically, folks, he’s no artist.
I was able to get out of the suite around 9:30 (that’s just a guess on time as this reporter does not own a watch) and it was perfect timing to catch a great performance by the Martini Kings. (photo 2) Crazy Al had jumped up on the stage and banged on his coconuts as some guest dancers moved around doing their sultry burlesque. Notice the Thor designed banners hanging on the back of the stage. Thor and Marina the Mermaid looked on with much enjoyment (photo3).
Following this, most attendees moved on to the room parties. I was able to witness a few of these, but in the process was separated from our cameraman. I will report again on this next full day of Oasis, once we locate a new cameraman. As far I we know our old one was escorted off the property, leaving all of his clothes in a nearby tree.
This is Peach Colada signing off.
- Note from Careless Navigator…Max has caught a case of “The Tiki Oasis Madness”…this time he has changed his name to Peach Colada…at least we know he will not run out of fruity cocktail names. Have fun Max.
